It hasn’t gone past the clear top layer. Light scratches like this can usually be polished out without repainting.

About machine polishing

Through to the colour

It’s gone through the lacquer into the colour, so it needs a paint repair. The area is prepared, primed, painted to your colour code and blended in.

The panel is pushed in

The panel is pulled or filled and shaped first so the finish sits flat, then primed, painted and blended.

How it’s done

Four stages, from your colour code to the final polish.

  1. Paint colour samples held against a red car
    Assess

We check the damage and your colour code, and quote the panels that need work.

  2. Masking a car with tape before paint and polishing work
    Prepare

Dents are pulled or filled, the area is sanded and primed so the surface is flat.

  3. Technician in safety clothing spraying car paint
    Paint

Colour and lacquer go on in the spray booth, blended into the panels beside it.

  4. Polishing a car panel with a machine polisher
    Finish

The new paint is flatted and polished so it matches the rest of the car.

Questionsabout paint, scratches and dents

Straight answers to what people ask us most. Can’t see yours? Call the workshop or send a few photos and ask.

Can you match my car’s colour?

Yes. We mix to your car’s factory colour code and blend into the surrounding panels for an even match. Custom colours are available too.

Is it a full respray or just the damaged panel?

Usually just the damaged area and its neighbours for blending. Full resprays are available if you want a fresh finish or a colour change.

Can you fix a scratch that’s gone through to the metal?

Yes. Deep scratches are filled, primed and painted, then blended in. Lighter marks that haven’t broken through the lacquer can often be polished out instead.

Will I be able to see where the repair is?

Blending the colour into the next panels and lacquering over the top is what stops a repair showing. It’s all done in our climate-controlled booth, so the finish lays down evenly.
